State Voting Laws Roundup

Since 2025, the Brennan Center for Justice has partnered with the Democracy Policy Lab on the State Voting Laws Roundup. The Brennan Center began the State Voting Laws Roundup in 2011, tracking state voting legislation around the country and publishing several roundups each year of the legislation as it moves through state legislatures. The project tracks legislation which expands or restricts voting access by making it easier or harder for eligible Americans to register, stay on the voter rolls, or vote compared to existing state law. Since 2022 the project has also tracked election interference legislation which either threatens the people and processes that make elections work or increases opportunities for partisan interference in election results or administration.

Research from the State Voting Laws Roundup has been cited in a wide range of news outlets, including the LA Times, La Opinión, and Election Law Blog.

Data Access

The historical Roundup dataset with data from 2021 to 2025 is available by request for research purposes. The dataset includes the subjects, impacts, effective dates, and state legislative links for proposed and enacted voting rights legislation from state legislatures during the period. Additional datasets with the legislative history, roll calls, and sponsor information for these bills are also available by request.
